Lakeland, Fla. – Megan Mayfield recorded an RBI single and Callie Darlinthrew a complete game shutout in the opener as Lynn University's softball team split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with Florida Southern Saturday afternoon at Barnett Field. The Fighting Knights fell in the second game, 6-0, but improve to 7-29 overall and 2-10 in the SSC.
The Blue & White scored the first game's only run in the fourth inning on one hit and three errors by the Moccasins. Carisa Cook led off the inning by reaching safely on an error by the second baseman. Cook advanced to second when Anne Marie Van Casteren reached on a fielder's choice as the pitcher's throw to second sailed wide of the bag. With one out, Kasey Murray reached on another error by the second baseman before Mayfield's two-out single to left drove in Cook from third.
Lynn's run in the fourth came just after Darlin got out of a two-on, no out jam in third unscathed. With runners on second and third, Darlin got the first out as Erin Foley laid down a bunt which Jordan Angel recovered and tagged out the runner trying to score. Brittany Martin then lined a shot to Murray at third and after she checked the runners, she fired to first for the second out. The final out came when Darlin got Randi Grimes to ground out gently to Cook at first unassisted.
Darlin scattered six hits and walked one in the opener as she recorded her first shutout of the season.
Despite four hits, Lynn was unable to get any runs in the second game as FSC got six runs including four in the sixth.
Katrina Lavadan led the Fighting Knights with three hits in thedoubleheader while Brittany Gross also had two. Cook scored the lone run on the day for Lynn. In the circle, Darlin threw pitched 13 innings and gave up five earned runs.
