BOCA RATON, Fla. - Mandi Brown's two-run double in the fifth gave Lynn University's softball team a 2-1 victory over Florida Tech in a Sunshine State Conference matchup Friday afternoon at the McCusker Sports Complex. The Fighting Knights improve to 8-31 overall and 3-10 in the SSC while the Panthers fall to 21-16 and 6-7 in league play.
Down 1-0 in the fifth, Brown delivered the clutch hit to drive in both Megan Mayfield and Katrina Lavadan. Mayfield led off the inning with a single through the right side and advanced to second on Brittany Gross' sacrifice bunt. Katrina Lavadan then singled, and with Brown at the plate, she and Mayfield played a little Panther-and-mouse game with the Florida Tech infield. As Mayfield would flinch to go home from third, Lavadan would head the other direction and Lavadan eventually wound up stealing second with Mayfield remaining at third. The extra base was huge as it put two runners in scoring position for Brown who drove in both runners with a one-out shot to the gap in right center.
Callie Darlin got the Panthers to go down 1-2-3 in the sixth before getting out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh to close out the game.
Darlin allowed just one run on eight hits in the complete game to record her fourth win of the season.
Lavadan and Anne Marie Van Casteren both recorded a pair of hits on the day to lead the offense for the Blue & White.
The same two teams will meet tomorrow morning for a 10am SSC doubleheader. Fans can follow the action by logging onto www.LynnFightingKnights.com and clicking on "Game Central."
