Women's Soccer Saintly in Victory Over Flagler

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's women's soccer team is off to its best five-game start since 2004 following its 3-1 victory over Flagler on Wednesday.  Melissa Ortiz notched her third game-winning goal of the season and Lina Forsman recorded her first career multi-goal game in helping the Fighting Knights improve to 4-0-1 overall.

Ortiz is now fourth in program history with 11 career game-winning goals while Kelsey Butler moved into a tie for second place with 175 career saves.  Butler trails Maegan Vondal by 46 saves for the top spot.

Quick strikes were the name of the game for both squads as the Blue & White struck first with a goal 10:45 into the match.  Jackie Hellet came back to receive a pass near the midfield line and immediately turned up-field to lead the LU attack.  After evading one defender and drawing Flagler's attention to the right side, Hellett slipped a through ball left of center, setting up Forsman for the goal.  The freshman out of Gothenburg, Sweden, beat Casey Merson to the pass and poked her shot inside the right post for the 1-0 Lynn lead.

There was a lull in action until 1:07 into the second half when the Saints (4-1-0) knotted the game at one.  Flagler put immediate pressure on the Blue & White defense to earn a corner kick from the left flag post.  Loren Cate then sent the corner into the middle of the box where Lindsay Zullohad a clear header for the score.

Lynn was forced to play back on its heels with the Saints continuing pressure.  A couple of shots by Ortiz breathed new life into the Blue & White attack and in the 75th minute of play Ortiz finally struck.  Collecting a pass at the top of the box, Ortiz found Forsman in the left corner for a give and go.  The senior forward's initial attempt was saved by Merson but with the keeper down, Ortiz was able to easily tap in on the open net.

The Fighting Knights padded their lead a minute and a half later for good measure with Forsman once again beating Merson in a one-on-one attempt.  Fellow freshman Lauren Handley set up the final goal after taking a pass from Kirstie Schults on the right wing.  Handley evaded one defender and centered a pass for her teammate.  Forsman found herself alone at the top of the box and struck a left-footed shot to the left post for her third goal of the year.

Lynn outshot Flagler 14-9 overall and edged the Saints 4-3 in corner kicks.  Both Butler and Merson logged three saves apiece.

The Fighting Knights return to the pitch on Saturday, September 17, at 4 p.m. when they host Saint Leo in a non-conference match-up.  Fans can watch the game live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting the Game Central icon.
