Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Lynn University women's soccer team's unbeaten streak came to an end following a 4-1 loss to Saint Leo on Saturday. Melissa Ortiz scored her team-leading fifth goal but the Fighting Knights record falls to 4-1-1 overall.
An innocent foul near midfield in the 13th minute of play set up LU to grab a 1-0 lead. Playing a free kick just inside Saint Leo (6-0-0) territory, Paige Meggison launched a pass towards the top of the box. Lauren Handley got the first head on the ball and Melissa Ortiz flipped the next touch over Laura Carstens' head for the score.
The Blue & White defense was doing a great job of keeping the Lions from getting easy shots, forcing Saint Leo into attempts from 25-yards or longer. Unfortunately, Cassie Barbaresi was able to take advantage of the strategy, finding the back of the net three times from that distance.
Her first strike came in the 31st minute off a failed clearance from 25-yards away. Her shot sailed into the left side of the net to knot the game at one. In the 57th minute she struck a shot from 30-yards out to the right post and her final goal came at 59:06 when she knocked in a goal from 35-yards away on the right sideline. The final goal came in the 79th minute from Ashley Acco.
Lynn still managed to out shoot Saint Leo 16-12 with Carstens turning away five shots and Kelsey Butler logging three stops.
The Fighting Knights return to action on Friday, September 23, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Lakeland, Fla., to take on Florida Southern. Fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting the Game Central icon.
