BOCA RATON, Fla.—Lynn University's softball team lost the first game to the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish 5-1 then fell in the second game 12-0 on a day that saw a 30 minute suspension in play due to an injury.
Freshman Delaney Brey tallied three hits for Lynn (0-15) and Mandi Brown collected two hits and six assists.
The Sailfish took an early 1-0 lead against Lynn in the first inning of game one on a two-out RBI single. Lynn answered back in the bottom of the first after Anne Marie Van Casteren belted a double to left field then scored on a PBA error.
Carisa Cook rifled a double in the second inning with two outs but could not score as Marianne Johnson flied out to left field to end the inning.
LU could only muster two more hits the rest of the game after inning number two while the Sailfish added a run in the third, two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to total the 5-1 win.
Callie Darlin started the first game and went four innings with six hits, gave up three earned runs, two walks and strikeout two. Missy Montgomery relieved Darlin in the fifth and tossed three innings with three hits and no earned runs. Lynn surrendered three errors in the game to total two unearned runs.
In game number two, both teams posted scoreless first and second innings until PBA unleashed 11 runs in inning number three.
Also during the third frame, the game came to a standstill after a Lynn injury caused a 30 minute delay. Prior to the delay, the Sailfish had scored three runs in the third. PBA rattled off eight more runs after the day to take a commanding 11-0 lead. The Knights committed four errors in that inning, all of which resulted in eight unearned runs.
Montgomery took the start and went three innings, giving up 10 hits and 11 runs. She walked three batters and struck out one. Darlin come in the game to start the fourth frame and pitched two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run.
