Softball Downed in Season Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

St. Augustine, Fla.—Lynn University's softball team fell to the Flagler College Saint in two games on Friday in the season opener. LU dropped the first game 4-1 then went down in the second game 8-0.

Freshman Delaney Brey combined for three hits in both games to lead Lynn (0-2) offensively. Callie Darlin took the circle in game one and went all six inning, giving up six hits, four earned runs with two strikeouts.

In game one, Flagler started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with one run then added three more in the third to go up 4-0.

Lynn threatened in the fourth as Darlin singled to center field to put runners on first and second with one out. The Fighting Knights were unable to post any runs as Vicky Naginsky and Bianca Savulak were retired in order.

Then in the sixth inning, Lauren Garceau started things off with a single and advanced to second on a Casey Vassallo single up the middle. Garceau eventually crossed the plate as the lone Knights' run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lynn loaded the bases with two outs but was unable to collect a key hit in the frame. The Blue & White stranded 11 to Flagler's six.

The Knights matched Flagler in the hits column with six. In addition to Brey's two hits, Vassallo added two, Garceau had one and Darlin posted the other Lynn base hit.

Kasey Murray started the second game for Lynn and gave up four earned runs on five hits and four walks.

Freshman Missy Montgomery entered the game in relief of Murray and surrendered two earned runs in two and two thirds innings.

The two Fighting Knights' hits came from the bats of Brey in the fourth and Carisa Cook in the fifth. Both hits led-off their respective inning but Lynn could not score in either frame.

Flagler answered with five runs in the second inning and one run in each of the next three innings to conclude the game in the bottom of the fifth.
