Women's Soccer Draws with Nova Southeastern

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn University women's soccer team opened Sunshine State Conference play with a 1-1 draw against Nova Southeastern on Saturday afternoon. Tatiana Penagos netted the game-tying goal with her first score of the season but the Fighting Knights saw their record move to 2-4-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the SSC.

The Blue & White dominated the entire match, holding possession of the ball for the majority of the 110 minutes of play.  Lynn outshot the Sharks (4-4-1) 30-9 and created several dangerous opportunities but it was the Sharks to put the first goal on the board.

In the 16th minute of play, LU keeper Caitlin Shaver came out of the box to challenge a NSU through ball to Malin Broberg. Broberg chipped the ball over Shavers head for the goal giving the Sharks a 1-0 advantage.

Lynn came ready to play in the second half, looking to put one in the back of the net after several missed opportunities in the previous period. The Fighting Knights put the Sharks defense under high pressure and finally capitalized in the 65th minute of play.

Linzi Martin started the motions on offensive with a shot from the right wing through traffic into the left post.  Amanda Feldstein collected the loose ball and sent an impeccably placed balled across the box to Penagos, who had an easy attempt to knot the match at one.

Nova Southeastern was held to only two shots in the second half with the last one coming in the final moments after a missed play by Shaver.  Broberg caught LU's keeper out of position and ripped a shot on the open net but the attempt sailed left to send the match into overtime.

Lynn had a close chance in the 94th minute when Lauren Handley hit the post for the first time.  The game then was LU's to lose as the team earned a penalty kick off a hand ball in the box.  Unfortunately, Handley's shot careened off the top left shelf and the two teams settled for a tie.

Shaver logged one save in the contest while her counterpart Sandra Rolon tallied a career-best nine stops.  Lynn also had an outstanding 14-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Fighting Knights return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 9, when they travel to Saint Leo, Fla., to battle Saint Leo University.  Fans can watch the match live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.  Don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook.
