Box Score Saint Leo, Fla. – A long-range goal mid-way through the first half proved the difference in Lynn University's 1-0 loss at Saint Leo on Wednesday night. The Fighting Knights defense held the top scoring team in the Sunshine State Conference to just three shots on frame while keeping the league's leading goal scorer to one shot attempt. Lynn moves to 2-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the SSC.
Coming off a match in which they outshot their opponent 30-9, the Blue & White was able to match that intensity off the opening whistle with pressure on the offensive end and grit on the defensive side. Three quick corner kicks and a blocked shot and LU seemed poised to find the back of the net.
Unfortunately, Saint Leo (6-3-0, 1-0-0 SSC) took advantage of a free kick near midfield to score the deciding goal. Set right of center just into LU territory, defender Selena James launched a shot/cross high into the air toward goal. With a little wind behind it, the ball soared over keeper Katie Nimitz's head.
The Fighting Knights continued their pressure in the second half, outshooting the Lions 7-2. Lynn's defensive unit of captain Paige Meggison, Georgia Robert, Lina Forsman and Brittany Garbina stymied the conference's leading scorer, Arielle Kabangu, all night by allowing only a shot well off its mark.
Making her first career start, Nimitz stopped one shot while her counterpart Abbey Evans made two saves and needed the assistance of her defense for another. Lynn had a chance for the equalizer in the 71st minute with Evans lying on the pitch after making diving punch stop off a Robert shot but the ensuing shot sailed high of its mark.
The Blue & White held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks and 12-6 lead in shots.
Lynn returns to the field on Saturday, October 12, at 5 p.m. when it travels to face 17th-ranked Tampa. Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-match updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine. Don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook also.
