BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's softball team swept Ave Maria in its home opener Wednesday afternoon. The Fighting Knights only needed six innings of work to win, 8-0, in both games. Kasey Murray and Missy Montgomery both picked up wins on the mound while only allowing one hit a-piece. Anne Marie Van Casteren led the Blue and White offense going four-for-six with two doubles and three RBIs.
In the opening game, the Knights scored three runs on five hits in the bottom of the third for a 3-0 lead. Ave Marie threatened in the top of the fourth, but stranded two on base. Two innings later the Knights were back at it with another three run innings while stranding one.
The top of the sixth was what sealed the game for the Knights with two runs scored when Devin Kochergen scored on an on an error by the Gyrenes' shortstop. Lydia West drove in the game-winning run when she singled to left field which scored Kaci Vassallo.
Kasey Murray pitched a six inning, two hit game. She threw 82 pitches for one strikeout against the 16 batters she faced. West, along with fourth other Fighting Knights had multi-hit games.
The momentum continued into the second game of the double header when LU scored three runs on two hits, while stranding one on base in the bottom of the first inning. In the second inning the Knights tacked on another run when Bianca Savulak reached on an error by the second baseman, which scored Danielle McNeill from second.
With a 4-0 lead heading into the fifth, LU made a push with three more runs on three hits. After a quick top of the sixth, Lynn held a 7-0 lead. With bases loaded McNeill drove in Anne Marie Van Casteren for the final run of the game.
Missy Montgomery pitched a complete six innings, allowing only one hit, with one strikeout and a walk. Van Casteren notched two doubles in the win. The Blue and White move to 7-6 on the season and will host Mercyhurst on Sunday, February 24. First pitch is set for 1 pm. Fans can catch all the action live at LYNNFightingKnights.com.
