Box Score Lakeland, Fla.- Lynn University's softball team was blanked by Florida Southern in the opening game of the three-game Sunshine State Conference series Friday night. The Fighting Knights move to 14-14 on the season, 0-4 in the SSC. Kasey Murray (8-9) pitched a complete game allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits in the loss.
Florida Southern scored it's first run of the game on a single by Dayna Hunn to left field, who then advanced on a fielding error by Christina Carvatta in left field. The error would score Gianni Artidiello, who reached base on a full-count walk. After the first inning FSC held a 1-0 edge over LU.
In the top of the third the Blue and White built a two-out threat with back-to-back singles but the middle from Danielle McNeill and Bianca Savulak. Devin Kochergen fouled off to left field to leave two Knights on base. The Mocs answered in the bottom half of the inning after a lead-off walk from Brown. After advancing to second base on a wild pitch, Brown scored on an RBI-single down the right field line from Hunn for the 2-0 lead.
LU would threaten again in the top of the sixth inning, with runners on first and second after back-to-back singles by Kaci Vassallo and Kochergen. However the Mocs were able to get out of the jam and hold off the Knights for the 2-0 win.
The Fighting Knights take the field Saturday, March 16 in Lakeland, Fla. for the remaining two games of the three-game set. First pitch of the double header is set for 1 pm.
