Box Score 2 Lakeland, Fla.- Lynn University's softball team swept Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon to take the Sunshine State Conference series, 2-1. In the 3-1 game one win, Missy Montgomery earned her seventh win of the season (7-5), with a four-hit, one-run, complete game. The Moccasins' only scored run of the game was unearned. In the second game, Kasey Murray pitched a complete game allowing five hits, two runs, on three strikeouts. The Fighting Knights offense was led by Murray and freshman Jasmine Campos in the 6-2 victory for game two.
A lead-off single from Danielle McNeill down the left field line started things off for the Fighting Knights in the the top of the first inning of game one. After stealing second base, McNeill advanced to third on a ground out from Bianca Savulak. McNeill scored on a sacrifice fly by Devin Kochergen to put LU up 1-0, early.
The Blue and White threatened again with bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning but a line drive to third base robbed Christina Carvatta of a base hit to end the inning. The Mocs answered back with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Gianni Artidiello reached on an error by the first baseman, and then advanced to second for an extra base. A Dayna Hunn ground out would send Artidiello to third who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Leah Pemberton for a tie game at 1-all.
Kochergen had the game-winning hit, a solo home run over the left center field fence in the top of the sixth inning for the Knights 2-1 lead. An insurance run in the top of the seventh would secure the victory when an RBI-single from McNeill would score Campos from third to give the Fighting Knights their 3-1 win.
Montgomery pitched a complete seven innings allowing only one unearned run, while recording no strike outs and walking not one Moccasins' batter en route to Lynn's first conference win of the season.
Game two of the double header had a different feel. After starting the game three up, three down, the Blue and White came back in the second inning to score two runs on two hits, while the Moccasins made two errors in the field. With runners on first and second base, Campos singled to right field and then advanced on the throw to second, while both Carvatta and Murray scored for the 2-0 lead.
FSC answered back in the bottom of the second when Khaliah Brown found herself in a pickle at first base in an attempt to score Christie Bailey from third, which scored the Mocassins first run before Brown was tagged out by second baseman, Anne Marie Van Casteren. The Mocs added another run when a single down the left field line would score the runner from third, but Carvatta's throw to Kochergen at the plate caught Hunn out at home who was attempting to score from second.
Tied 2-all in the to of the fourth inning, LU scored it's third run when a single to the pitcher for Campos scored Anne Marie Van Casteren from third, who reached earlier on a single down the right field line. A two-run single from Kaci Vassallo scored McNeill and Savulak who bolted from second base rounding third without hesitation and headed for home for the 5-2 lead in the fifth inning.
An RBI-single to right field from McNeill in the sixth would plate Campos for LU's sixth and final run of the game. Murray (9-9) earned the win on the mound for the Fighting Knights while going 3-for4 at the plate and scoring a run. Campos went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored in the win.
Campos went 4-for-6 on the day while recording her third extra-base hit of the season in game one. The Blue and White are two games above .500 after the two-game sweep. March 23-24 the Fighting Knights (16-14, 2-4) host Florida Tech in a SSC match up. First pitch is set for 3 pm on Saturday, with the double header being played on Sunday.
