Box Score Winter Park, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team lost its Sunshine State Conference season opener at Rollins, 8-0, Friday night. The Fighting Knights move to 14-11 on the season, 0-1 in the SSC. The Tars held LU to only three hits, two of which came from junior Devin Kochergen. Missy Montgomery earned the loss allowing eight runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
A one-out walk from Bianca Savulak would set up Kochergen in the first inning, who singled up the middle for her first hit of the game. Two consecutive strike outs would end the early threat from the Fighting Knights after just one hit.
After a double from the Tars with one away, Alred homered to left center to score the first two runs for Rollins. Montgomery allowed just two hits in the inning but the shot from Alred was done. In the bottom of the second inning Rollins would score three more runs on one hit and a fielding error by Lynn. The three-run bomb to Halpin was her first of the season.
A sacrifice fly from Gipson in the bottom of the third would score the a run for the Tars to lead, 6-0. In the bottom of the fourth inning three consecutive singles would load the bases for Halpin, who drew an RBI-walk for Rollins' seventh run. Johnson reached on a fielder's choice when Danielle McNeill fielded the ball to throw out the runner at home. A wild pitch struck the next batter, to drive in the eighth and final run for the Tars before Lynn was able to hold off the Fighting Knights with just one hit from Jasmine Campos in the top of the fifth inning.
The Fighting Knights take the field for the final two games of the three-game series Saturday, March 9. First pitch of the double header is set for 1 pm.
