Softball Holds Bucs to 13 Scoreless Frames in SSC Split

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with Barry University on Sunday afternoon. After dropping the first game 2-1, the Fighitng Knights blanked BU 3-0 in the second game to split the series 1-1. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 13, but due to weather it was postponed until Sunday afternoon. The afternoon began when the Knights were joined on the field for the National Anthem by the Coral Springs Panthers U10 travel softball team, who were recognized by Lynn University.

Both Missy Montgomery and Kasey Murray struck out six batters in complete games holding the Buccaneers to 13-straight scoreless innings. Murray earned her 11 win of the season while Montgomery is 8-11 in 2013.

Barry (25-15, 12-5 SSC) started the day scoring two runs, one earned, in the opening frame. The Fighting Knights would respond when Kaci Vassallo hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Danielle McNeill, which would be the final run of the ball game. Lynn was outhit 10-2, but the defensive play of catcher Devin Kochergen kept the game close.

Game two had an identical tempo as its predecessor, with all the runs being scored in the first inning. McNeill scored in the top of the first inning to give Lynn the 1-0 lead. Anne Marie Van Casteren plated two runs with an RBI-single on a fly ball that dropped into shallow center field to extend the LU lead 3-0. No more runs were scored as Lynn held the Bucs scoreless allowing only seven hits.

The Blue and White stands at 19-24, 5-12 in the SSC. Lynn and Barry will conclude the three-game series on Monday, April 15 at the Lynn Softball Field. First pitch is set for 4 pm. Don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram to receive in-game updates.
