Pensacola, Fla.- Lynn University's men's tennis team, ranked fifth, fell in the NCAA South Region Finals, 5-4, to the fourth-ranked University of West Florida to end the 2013 season on Sunday. The Fighting Knights finish 17-7, 5-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.
West Florida took a 1-0 lead early when No. 4 Kevin Ducros and Bruno Savi defeated No. 3 Willi Wolfer and Vlad Cirla, 8-5. LU's Max Kouyate and Alessio Iannozzi won number two doubles, 8-6, over UWF's Tony Rajaobelina and Domenico Sano. With the match tied at 1-all, the number three doubles was a crucial point for both teams. Simon Gloeckner and Pavel Mojha trailed 3-0 before making a come back to force a tie breaker. The Argonauts won the point, 9-8 (8-6), for Lynn to trail by one heading into singles.
#43 Rajaobelina defeated #27 Kouyate, 6-1, 6-2, to start off singles play. UWF would extend its lead to 4-1 when No. 3 Savi beat No. 23 Cirla, 6-3, 6-0. Three straight singles victories from Lynn would even the score to 4-all.
Gloeckner, a freshman for the Fighting Knights, beat Sano in sets of 6-3 and 6-1 to ignite Lynn's come back. No. 9 Wolfer defeated No. 8 Ducros at the top singles spot in two sets of 6-4 for put Lynn within one point. Mojha knotted the match at 4-all when he beat Felipe Frattini 6-2, 6-4.
It all game down to the number four singles match up between No. 45 Elio Latela and No. 47 Alessio Iannozzi. After Iannozzi dropped the first set, 6-2, he kept the second set close but fell in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-2).
West Florida advances to the NCAA National Tournament in Sunrise, Az., while the Fighting Knights season ends. Lynn will graduate Wolfer and Kouyate in May and will return three of six starters next season.
