Lynn Softball Splits the Home Opener Against Embry-Riddle

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's softball team split the day on their home opener against Embry-Riddle on Sunday afternoon at the Lynn Softball Fields . The Fighting Knights dropped the first game of the day 5-4  before coming back to win the final game, 6-1. Missy Montgomery pitched her first complete game in her second start of the season, holding the Eagles to one run and six hits. Cherise McEnery went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in while Danielle McNeill went 1-for 3 with two runs scored  in the win.

Lynn was the first to score in the third inning when Devin Kochergen singled up the middle scoring McNeill. Kasey Murray gave Lynn the game-winning run with an RBI ground out to second base scoring Sara Vazquez

Embry-Riddle (3-3)  cut the deficit, 2-1, in the fifth when  Dee Espinosa drove home Anna Battison with an RBI single.The Fighting Knights answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning led by Kasey Vassallo and McEnery. A ball hit deep down the left field line by Vassallo sent McNeill home to take the 3-1 lead. McEnry followed with a two run home-run over the center field fence, her fourth of the year.

Mongomery pitched seven innings allowing just one run while striking out one batter with no walks. She was making her fifth appearance and only her second start of the season.

In the first game, Embry-Riddle was the first on the board scoring in the top of the first inning when pitcher Robi Zimmerman singled to center field scoring Espinosa.

The Blue and White would come back strong in the bottom of the fourth, inning scoring four runs to take the lead, 4-1. Lynn loaded the bases with back-to-back errors allowing Vazquez's single to score a run. The Fighting Knights added three more runs when Cydney Schmidt smacked a clutch double to left field with the bases still loaded.

Lynn held the lead until the top of the sixth inning when the Eagles took advantage of two walks and a hits battsman, scoring four runs to claim the game.  

The Blue & White (7-6) will return to the diamond on Saturday traveling to West Palm Beach, Fla. taking on Charleston at 11am followed by a 3pm game against Merrimack. Fans can follow the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com.
