Tampa, Fla.- Lynn University's women's tennis team defeated Tampa (0-1), 6-3, in the Sunshine State Conference season opener on Saturday afternoon. Valentine Confalonieri and Ioana Ivan led the way for the Blue & White while freshman Rosalie Willig also had a solid day for Lynn.
The sixth-ranked Fighting Knights took a 3-0 lead after doubles play with No. 5 Confalonieri and Ivan defeating Tampa's top duo Lauren Hewett and Meg Wladimirski, 8-2. The number two doubles team of Andrea Berkova and Rosalie Willig battled to an 8-6 win over UT's Lindsay Nochowicz and Kelsey Matthrews. Alina Jane and Kim Przeszlowski rounded out the doubles sweep when they defeated Viviana Tedino and Jenelle Morgan, 8-2.
Rain delayed the match for six hours before the courts were dry enough to resume play and when it did, top-ranked Confalonieri swept Hewett in two straight sets, 6-0. Ivan, who ranks 11thin singles, beat Wladimirski in two sets, 6-2 and 6-4. Willig captured Lynn's sixth point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tedino in the three spot. Przeszlowski, Jane and Miljkovic all dropped their singles matches at the bottom of the lineup.
This marks the seventh consecutive season that Lynn has began 2-0 and improves the Blue & White to 22-0 all-time against the Spartans.
