BOCA RATON Fla.- Lynn University's No. 3-ranked tennis team beat Bethune Cookman (0-4), 8-1, Sunday afternoon at the Perper Tennis Complex. The Fighting Knights will take a 2-0 record into their next match on Wednesday, February 12, at 3 p.m.
Lynn swept the doubles, taking wins in matches featuring No. 3-ranked Vlad Cirla and No. 19-ranked Paolo Volpicelli. At the number one spot for The Fighting Knights, the duo of Volpocelli and Danny Riggs beat Cookman's Gilbert Rotich and Pablo Lopez, 8-3. Lynn partners Cirla and Tomas Porkop beat Santiago Lobelo and Diego Garavito, 8-5 at the number two spot. Alessio Iannozzi and Roman Turtygin were also 8-5 winners over Walid Gtari and Alvaro Barrera at the number three.
The Fighting Knights took the number one and two spot in singles quickly. Cirla took downed Gtari in a smooth 6-2, 6-2, while Riggs defeated Lobelo, 6-0, 6-3. The third spot match-up of Volpocelli and Garavito, would not be so prompt after splitting the first two sets. Volpocelli took the first 6-4 while Garavito claimed the second set 6-4 sending the match into a third-set tiebreaker. The battle would end in Cookman's favor, 11-9, giving the Wildcats their only point of the match.
Unfortunately the weather was not as favorable as the rain came just as the four, Iannozzi, five, Porkop and six, Turtygin singles took the court. All three matches won by default to claim the overall victory, 8-1, over Bethune Cookman.
The Fighting Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, February 12, when the host Palm Beach Atlantic at 3 p.m. Fans can follow live stats at lynnfightingknights.com and get in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter Instagram and Vine.
