Top-Ranked Pirates Hand No. 6 Women's Tennis First Loss of Season

Savannah, Ga.- Lynn University's women's tennis team (15-1) was handed its first loss of the season on Friday afternoon. The top-ranked Armstrong Pirates defeated No. 6 Lynn, 6-3, in non-league play. Valentine Confalonieri proved herself worthy of her No. 1 singles ranking in the nation with a come-from-behind victory over No. 3 Aleksndra Filipovski.

Lynn's top duo, who ranks fifth nationally, was the only doubles team to win today. Confalonieri paired with Ioana Ivan to take down No. 2 Filipovski and Barbora Kritckova, 8-4. No. 6 Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa defeated Andrea Berkova and Rosalie Willig at No.2 doubles, 8-5, while Lynn's Alina Jane and Kim Przeszlowski were blanked by Clara Perez and Carolina Prats-Milan at the three spot.

AASU swept the bottom end of the singles lineup to secure the victory. No. 11 Ivan then beat No. 16 Hacke, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, at the three spot before No. 1 Confalonieri won, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, at the top spot. No. 15 Krtickova defeated Willig in a close 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 11-9, battle to finish out singles action.

The loss moves Lynn to 10-16 all-time against the Pirates since the two first met in 1995. 2014 marks the first season since 2011 that the Fighting Knights began the season 15-1. That year the Blue & White won the South Region Championship and finished as the NCAA National Runner-Up.

Lynn will return to action on Saturday, March 15, for a match-up against No. 5 Columbus State. Fans can follow the tennis team all season long at LynnFightingKnights.com. Don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
