Softball Swims a Marathon with Sailfish

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team took 24th-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic to extra innings in both games of a double-header; falling 3-2 in nine innings in the first game before having game two postponed due to darkness with the score tied 10-10 in the 11th inning. Danielle McNeill and Devon Kochergen both had multiple hits in both contests. With the loss Lynn drops to 17-16 on the season.

Neither team was able to bring a runner home during regulation in the opening game as it took extra-innings for both teams to finally reach the scoreboard.  Lynn and Palm Beach Atlantic (20-5) exchanged runs in the eighth inning before the Sailfish scored two in the top of the ninth. Kasey Vassallo hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring McNeill but the Fighting Knights could not find enough offense to score another run.

Along with Kochergen and McNeill Cydney Schmidt also had two hits. Lynn outhit PBA 8-7 in the loss.

Murray (7-9) tossed a nine- inning complete game, allowing only seven hits and one earned run. The senior from Lutz, Fla., struck out two and walked four in the contest.

The Fighting Knights scored the bulk of their runs in the second game in the third inning. Kochergen and Cherise McEnery both hit home runs to center field and right center to score five runs combined. McNiell hit a sac fly to right field to score Schmidt earlier in the frame. Two innings later McEnery dropped another home run to center field to put Lynn up 7-5.

In the seventh inning Sara Vazquez singled to left field to bring home pinch runner Christina Carvatta to knot the score up at 8-8. Both teams would score runs in the ninth and 10th inning to the game locked.

The second game will be concluded on April 9, when the Blue & White were already scheduled to play Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach.

The Fighting Knights are back in action on Friday, March 21, when they host Eckerd in a Sunshine State Conference series.  Game time is set for 3 p.m. and fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com or receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
