St. Augustine, Fla. – Losses at both No. 1 singles and doubles spots did not deter Lynn University's ninth-ranked men's tennis team as they turned away Flagler 7-2 on Monday afternoon. Fernando Rivas and Paolo Volpicelli each had victories in both singles and doubles play.
Volpicelli and Alessio Iannozzi put the Blue & White ahead 1-0 with an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 position. Rivas then teamed up with Danny Riggs to put away Brant Switzler and David Espinosa 8-4 in the second spot. Flagler earned its only doubles point with an 8-5 win.
Pavel Mojha gave Lynn a 3-1 advantage by knocking off Espinosa 6-1 and 6-2 at the No. 3 singles position. A 6-0, 6-4 victory by Volpicelli in the last singles spot brought the Fighting Knights one-point closer to a match victory and Mehdi Laalej put it away by taking down Bruno Padilha 6-1, 6-2.
Rivas followed suit in the 'W' column with a 6-2, 6-4 victory and Ethan Itzkovitz outlasted Willy Hasselberg 6-4, 4-6 and 10-7 in a three-set marathon match. Lynn's only singles loss came at No. 1 where Riggs fell 7-5, 6-4 to Jose Martinez.
