Errors Key Seven-Run Comeback for Baseball

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Great teams find ways to win and Lynn University's 11th-ranked baseball team did just that by recovering from a seven-run deficit to outlast Felician 9-7 on Monday afternoon.  Ryan Caporice tossed three shutout innings of relief and the Fighting Knights capitalized on five Golden Falcon errors to improve to 11-3 overall.

The slow comeback began in the sixth with the Blue & White trailing 7-0.  Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded, Ryan Carmona hit a slow roller to second base and beat the throw from Sean Rogers to plate Lynn's first run of the afternoon.

Momentum carried over into the next frame with John Borup reaching base on a five-pitch walk.  Felician's first error off a Kain groundball provided immediate dividends as Matt Tietz followed with a triple to center, cutting the Golden Falcon's lead to 7-3.  A RBI single from Albert Lefran and sacrifice fly by Cory Gibson brought Lynn closer, 7-5.

Lynn completed its comeback in the eighth by capitalizing on three Felician errors, two of which came off throwing errors from the catcher.  With the bases loaded, Matt Ackerman reached home following a wild pitch from Danny Naif.  Trying to catch Ackerman at home, catcher Dan Bielitz threw the ball into left field, allowing John Borup to score the tying run.

After Alex DeBellis walked, head coach Rudy Garbalosa gave the green light for a double-steal.  Kain slid in safely at third but another poor throwing error from Bielitz brought the senior third baseman home for the winning run.  Eric Schindler then followed with a double into the left center gap to give the Blue & White an insurance run, 9-7.

Caporice was nearly unhittable coming off a disappointing start at St. Thomas (Fla.) where he allowed seven runs in 0.2 innings.  The junior right-hander held the Golden Falcons hitless over three frames without issuing a walk and striking out one.  Caporice gave way to Bill Mendek in the ninth and the preseason All-American delivered his third save by striking out two.

Jimmy O'Neill earned the start and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits over four innings with two walks and a strikeout.  He was the victim of suspect defense in the third when an error led to an unearned run.  O'Neill then surrendered a two-run home run in the fourth before turning the bump over to AJ Falleta.

The normally reliable Falleta gave up three runs on a home run by Brennan Price and looked to recover with a pair of strikeouts.  But one swinging pitch in the dirt turned into a throwing error and Felician was able to tack on another run to build its 7-0 lead.

Borup reached base four times on the day, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a hit by pitch.  He also scored twice.  Kain was 0-for-3 with two runs, Alex DeBellis went 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored and Gibson was 2-for-3 with a RBI.

The Fighting Knights are back on the diamond on Wednesday, March 4, at 3 p.m. when they host Southern New Hampshire at the Lynn Baseball Field.  Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
