Get the Brooms Out; Softball Sweeps Eckerd

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team had a mighty fine day at the ballpark on Saturday, taking both games of its doubleheader, 2-1 and 4-3, to complete the three-game sweep over Eckerd.  This is the first Sunshine State Conference sweep for the Fighting Knights since 2009 and improved their record to 17-14 overall and 7-5 in league play.

Two third-inning runs were all the Fighting Knights needed in the opening contest.  Kaci Vassallo drove home one run with a RBI bunt single while Cristina Carvatta turned on the burners to cross home plate after Eckerd pitcher Erin Dixson threw away the throw attempting to get Vazquez.

The two-run cushion was enough for Francais Olexa.  The freshman southpaw was outstanding in the circle, fanning five batters and allowing only five hits in her second complete game of the year.  Eckerd (27-9, 8-7 SSC) would get its only run off Olexa in the sixth with a RBI single from Brittany Mitchell.

Leanne Wright gave Lynn a 1-0 lead in game two in the first, with a RBI drive to right field to score Sara Vazquez.  The Fighting Knights slim advantage held until the fifth when Eckerd tied things up with a RBI single by Kiley King.

The Blue & White bats heated up in the top of the sixth as they plated three runs all with two outs.  Vassallo doubled to start the inning and moved to third on an Olexa sacrifice bunt.  A second out brought Cherise McEnery to the plate and the senior first baseman did not disappoint, knocking home Vassallo with a base hit up the middle.

After Manya Lopez walked, Jasmine Campos and Amanda Casillas connected on back-to-back RBI singles to give Lynn a much needed 4-1 lead.

Eckerd used four hits to bring home two runs in the bottom of the frame but Dana Paul was thrown out at home attempting to score from first to end the Triton's hopes of salvaging a game.

Missy Montgomery retired two in the ninth before an error brought the tying run to first but Kirby Parnell flied out weekly to center field to complete Lynn's first sweep since 2009.  The Fighting Knights' senior pitcher collected her 10th CG, allowing three runs on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts.  She is now 10-4 in the circle.

Lynn is back in action this week when it begins a three-game series at Nova Southeastern beginning on Thursday, April 2, at 6 p.m.  Fans can keep up with the action at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
