BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's Danny Riggs defeated the No. 2 singles player in Division II on Thursday afternoon as the Fighting Knights beat Lewis 8-1 at the Perper Tennis Complex. The ninth-ranked Blue & White improves to 8-1 overall and is on a five-match win streak heading into next Tuesday's match against Georgia Gwinnett.
Lynn dropped its only point at No. 1 doubles to the fifth-ranked Armand Levandi and Erik Aunapuu. The Flyer's top pair took down the Fighting Knights Pavel Mojha and Mehdi Laalej, 8-5. Top-ranked doubles duo Paolo Volpicelli and Danny Riggs won at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, over Mate Srdanovic and Andre Norasith while Alessio Iannozzi and Fernando Rivas won 8-0 over Chris Jastrab and Alan Fijalkowski at the three-spot to give Lynn a 2-1 lead after doubles.
The Fighting Knights swept singles play which started with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot for Mojha. Rivas claimed a victory at the No. 4 singles spot to make it a 4-1 Lynn lead. Rivas trailed Srdanovic 6-5 in the first set but battled back to win two-straight points for a 7-6 win and cruised to a 6-1 second set win. 23rd-ranked Riggs then defeated No. 2 Levandi, 6-1, 6-4, at the top singles spot to clinch the Blue & White's win. Ethan Itzkovitz won in consecutive 6-1 sets at No. 5 singles while Volpicelli defeated Fijalkowski 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
This was the first meeting between the Fighting Knights and Flyers in program history and comes as Coach Perez's 335th non-conference win in his 26th season as head coach.
