BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's men's tennis team fell to third-ranked Barry, 6-3, at the Perper Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Knights (14-3) suffer their third loss of the season and move to 4-2 in league play while Barry stays unbeaten at 17-0 and 6-0 in the Sunshine State Conference. Danny Riggs earned a pair of wins in the loss as he defeated fourth-ranked Fabian Groetsch in a three-set battle at the top singles spot.
No. 8 Ahmed Triki and Groetsch defeated Pavel Mojha and Mehdi Laalej 8-2 at the top of the doubles lineup giving Barry a 1-0 lead but Alessio Iannozzi and Riggs won 8-4 over Kevin Sielmann and Renato Lombardi at the No. 2 spot to even the score, 1-1. Three doubles went the distance with a 9-7 final score in favor of Lynn's Fernando Rivas and Paolo Volpicelli over Dominik Haider giving the Blue & White a 2-1 lead after doubles.
Lombardi put away Volpicelli at No. 5 singles 7-5, 6-1, to make it a 2-2 match and third-ranked Triki retired No. 47 Rivas in consecutive 6-2 sets giving the Bucs a 3-2 lead. Nico Dreer defeated Iannozzi 7-6, 6-0 at the bottom of the singles lineup for a 4-2 BU lead.
After dropping the first set to Groetsch, 6-1, No. 11 Riggs battled back to force a third set winning 6-3. He took down Barry's top man 6-4 in the rubber set earning the victory bringing the Fighting Knights within one of Barry, 4-3.
Laalej fell 7-5, 6-1, to Fabian Pronnet at No. 4 singles which secured the victory for BU and Haider's three-set win over Mojha finalized the score 6-3 in Barry's favor.
Lynn will play its final match of the regular season on Saturday, April 18, when the Fighting Knights go head-to-head with No. 4 Armstrong. First serve is set for 2 pm at the Perper Tennis Complex.
