Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's softball season came to an end on Saturday with a pair of losses to Tampa (28-11, 16-8) in conference play. UT took game one 4-1 from the Fighting Knights and completed the Sunshine State Conference series sweep with a 6-1 victory in the final game. Lynn finishes the regular season 20-25 overall and 10-14 in the league, its best SSC record since 2004.
It was an emotional day at the Lynn University Softball field as the four seniors, Christina Carvatta, Cherise McEnery, Missy Montgomery and Kaci Vassallo were honored in pre-game ceremonies for Senior Day.
In game one, Tampa took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kandi Kuder led off with a solo home run to left field. Lynn was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Sara Vazquez reached on a fielding error by the Spartans pitcher Julia Morrow. Manya Lopez scored from second on the play which evented the game 1-1.
Tampa responded in the top of the sixth inning with a two-out double by Lindsay Dring that scored Meagan Burke and Sahrina Cortes for a 3-1 UT lead. An RBI single by Kuder in the top of the seventh extended the Tampa lead to 4-1 and the Blue & White was unable to recover as Morrow struck out two Knights in the final frame for her 24th win of the season.
Montgomery earned the loss in the circle allowing four runs on 10 hits to move to 12-8 in her final season as a Fighting Knight. Carvatta went 2-for-3 at the plate while Leanne Wright and Francais Olexa each recorded a hit. Morrow struck out eight in seven innings pitched allowing one unearned run on four hits.
In game two, Dring got the Spartans on the board first in the opening frame with an RBI single that scored Juder for a 1-0 lead. As the rain poured down over the field, Taylor Collins smacked a two-run home run over the left field fence right past the glove of Lynn's leftfielder Wright for a 3-0 lead. After a brief rain delay, Cortes extended the UT lead to 4-0 with a double to left center that scored Kuder, who hit a triple down the right field line.
Montgomery came in to pitch relieving Olexa who threw three and a third innings allowing five earned runs on ten hits. A double to left center by Bre Setree made it a 5-0 game before Olexa escaped the jam with two runners on base.
Wright hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning but UT added an insurance run in the fifth with a fielder's choice that scored Kelsey Humphrey.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth Vassallo doubled to left center but Lynn was unable to score her. Tampa held on to win 6-1 clinching at least a share in the SSC Regular Season Title.
Wright went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and one run scored and Vassallo and Amanda Casillas both went 1-for-3. Olexa (6-14) was credited with the loss throwing three and a third innings.
Lynn finishes 20-25 overall with its first 20-win season since 2010 when the Fighting Knights went 24-31. The Blue & White graduates four seniors this May but will return ten letter winners from 2015 including five starters.
