Box Score 2 Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team won its second consecutive league series following a doubleheader split against Nova Southeastern on Friday afternoon. The Fighting Knights won 6-5 in the opener to secure the series but dropped game two 2-1. Leanne Wright drove in three runs while clubbing a game-winning home run while Katelyn Key went the distance in the game two loss.
The Blue & White, who improved to 19-15 overall and 9-6 in the Sunshine State Conference, claimed back-to-back conference series wins and their third overall in a season for the first time since 2006. Lynn's nine SSC wins are also the most since 2004.
Tied 5-5 heading into the seventh inning, Wright put Lynn ahead when she blasted her fifth home run of the season over the fence in left field. Francais Olexa then took the circle and navigated through traffic with runners on second and third by inducing a game-ending fly out to Wright.
Three first inning runs set the table for another six-run outing from the Fighting Knights. Wright drove home the first run with a single up the middle before Jasmine Campos laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Kaci Vassalo. Manya Lopez added the final run with a double off the left field wall for a 3-0 lead.
The Sharks added a run in the home half of the first but Vassallo put Lynn ahead 4-1 with a single to center field. Nova added two more in the third to make it a 4-3 game only to watch as Wright struck again with a RBI single up the middle.
Key took the rubber in game two and stymied NSU over the first four frames until the Sharks broke through with a RBI single in the fifth by Maegan Lee. Vassallo then drove in the equalizer on a RBI single to plate Sara Vazquez in the top of the sixth.
But the Sharks scored the eventual winner on a two-out single by Jessie Brown in the bottom of the sixth.
Key allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and one strikeout in tossing her second complete game of the year.
