Women's Tennis Narrowly Misses SSC Championship Repeat

Bradenton, Fla. – In what appeared to be a slight sense of déjà vu, Lynn University's second-ranked and second-seeded women's tennis team went match-for-match with the third-ranked and top-seeded Barry University Buccaneers in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament title match for the second year in a row. HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The match began on Saturday, April 22. The sides just completed doubles play before rain came, causing a delay and then an eventual postponement.
  • The Fighting Knights claimed a 2-1 edge through doubles. Diana Bogolii and Grace Mpassy posted an 8-3 win at No. 2 to start off the match, handing Zuza Maciejewska and Verena Schmid their first doubles loss of the year.
  • Martina Gledacehava and Tereza Hejlova followed up with an 8-5 triumph at No. 3 doubles, guaranteeing an early Lynn advantage.
  • At the top doubles flight, Lynn's Rosalie Willig and Stefanie Stemmer were in a 7-2 hole before rallying back strong, but ultimately took an 8-6 defeat.
  • All six singles contests commenced on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
  • Barry stuck first with a straight-set win at the top flight from 16th-ranked Maciejewska.
  • Hejlova notched the first singles win for Lynn – a 7-5, 6-3 decision at No. 6.
  • Barry knotted the match back up at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3.
  • The two, four and five flights all went deep into third sets.
  • Willig gave Lynn a 4-3 advantage, bouncing back from a first-set defeat at No. 2 (4-6, 6-1, 6-3).
  • Barry quickly answered, winning the fourth flight, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
  • The marathon battle at No. 5 singles became the decider. Gledacheva won the opening set but Barry's 16th-ranked Sonja Larsen fought off a Gledacheva comeback late in the third set and prevailed in the end, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • In the 2016 title match, Willig clinched the championship for Lynn, 5-3, with a win at No. 3 singles over Larsen.
  • Lynn's only two losses this season have been 5-4 setbacks to Barry.
  • Gledacheva vs. Larsen at No. 5 singles was the deciding point in both matchups this season.
  • Barry captured its 10th SSC Tournament championship, joining Lynn and Florida Southern for most in league history in women's tennis.
  • Lynn vs. Barry was the SSC final on both the men's and women's side in 2017.
