Veliz Sets Program Stolen Bases Record in Softball Loss

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team could not get past Eckerd on Saturday, falling 2-0 and 3-2 to the Tritons.  Mia Veliz set the program record for stolen bases in a season with 17.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • Game 1
    • Kayla Sheffield (8-12) pitched well in the circle, allowing two runs, one earned, off eight hits in six innings of work.
    • Nikole Van Gennep shut down Lynn's offense for the second consecutive game, fanning four batters and allowing just four hits in seven shutout innings.
    • Mackenzie Wyatt, Elizabeth Diaz, Britney Purser and Veliz connected on base hits.
  • Game 2
    • Lynn trailed the Tritons 1-0 until a two-run outburst in the fifth.  Unfortunately Eckerd answer back in the bottom of the inning and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth.
    • Olivia Saviskas (3-6), walked four and struck out three in five innings, allowing three runs on six hits.
    • Allyson Jameston tossed a perfect sixth.
    • Grace Hastings-Wydetic was 2-for-2 with a run batted in.
    • Sheffield drove in the second run for Lynn.
    • Natalie Costero joined Hastings-Wydetic with a two-hit outing.
    • Veliz was 1-for-3 with the stolen base.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Veliz breaks Danielle McNeill's record of 16 set in 2014.
  • Veliz has only been thrown out once in 18 attempts (.944), which is the third-best in program history among players with at least 10 attempts.
  • This was Hasting's second career multi-hit game and first since Feb. 3.
  • Eckerd's Van Gennep did not allow a run against Lynn in the series.
  • Sheffield is now tied with Diaz for the team lead with 15 RBIs.
