Lynn women's soccer falls on the road in overtime to national No. 1 Flagler

St. Augustine, Fla. - The Fighting Knights used three second-half goals to force overtime, but ultimately fell in the 99th minute to the No. 1 team in the nation.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • The first half was all Flagler. The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead heading into the break, while the Fighting Knights struggled to get anything going offensively. Lynn put up just two shots with only one on target, while Flagler put up five and four on goal.
  • Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Anniina Sankoh scored on a penalty kick to bring the Fighting Knights within one. It was Sankoh's second goal of the season.
  • Lynn had opportunities to tie throughout the second half, but in the 84th minute, Flagler's Castronio Mujica scored on a penalty kick to put the Saints up 3-1 and give them what seemed like an insurmountable lead.
  • Just 70 seconds after Mujica's goal, Emma Nuutinen scored her first goal of the season thanks to a beautiful pass from Savannah Jackson who earned the assist. The goal pulled the Fighting Knights within one with just under five minutes remaining.
  • Three minutes later, Nuutinen scored her second goal of the game, as the Fighting Knights tied the score at three and sent the match into overtime.
  • Nine minutes into overtime, Josefine Nilsen found the back of the net to give the Saints the 4-3 victory.
  • Lynn was outshot 21-11 in the game, and the Fighting Knights had just four shots on goal compared to 12 for Flagler.
  • Goalkeeper Sofia Manner stopped eight of the 12 shots she faced. She now has 12 saves in two games this season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Nuutinen and Jackson both registered their first points as Fighting Knights on the second goal of the game. Both players joined the program ahead of this season.
  • The start of the game was delayed for over two hours because of heavy rains in St. Augustine. 
  • The Fighting Knights have now played three overtime periods in their first two games of the season.

Lynn will return to Boca Raton and play their home opener against Delta State this upcoming Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
