Fighting Knights take down national No. 1 Barry

Miami Shores, Florida - The Fighting Knights traveled to Barry to take on the No. 1 team in the nation, and behind some powerhouse performances, they managed to pull the upset and pick up their first SSC win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Fighting Knights picked up the double point after impressive performances from their duos. In first doubles, Lucca Baptista and Diego Gonzalez were able to come away victorious by a score of 6-3. The Fighting Knights would lose the third doubles matchup, but the team of Ignacio Martinez and Will Kirkman secured victory in second doubles to give Lynn the 2-1 victory for the doubles point.
  • In singles, the Fighting Knights found themselves matched up with three nationally-ranked opponents.
  • In first singles, Gonzalez fell to national No. 25 Alessandro Giuliato in straight sets (6-1, 7-5).
  • In second singles, 43rd-ranked Baptista picked up the biggest win of the day for the Fighting Knights. He took down national No. 3 Alejandro Gallego in a three-set thriller (6-2, 3-6, 6-3). The match was the fifth singles matchup to finish and tied the team score at 3-3.
  • Martinez also took on a top-10 opponent in national No. 9 Alejandro Palacios. Martinez dropped the first set 7-6 (10-3), then the second set 6-2.
  • In fourth singles, Gianmarco Amatiste defeated his opponent in straight sets (6-2, 7-6 (10-4)).
  • Kirkman would lose sixth singles in straight sets by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
  • Fifth singles would prove to be the deciding match of the day as Lynn's Gabrielle Felline took on Hugo Cazaban. Felline dropped the first set 6-3, then battled back to take the second set 6-3. In the third set, Felline and Cazaban fought to a tiebreaker, with Felline coming away with the 10-3 win to wrap up the upset for the Fighting Knights.

UP NEXT:
The Fighting Knights will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Miami Gardens to take on St. Thomas on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.
