Fighting Knights defeat 17th-ranked Spartans

Boca Raton, Florida - The Fighting Knights went on the road and defeated the Tampa Spartans to pick up their third SSC win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Doubles got started with a matchup between two ranked teams. The 14th-ranked duo of Karyna Bihel and Jacqueline Wagner got the better of the Spartans' 24th-ranked duo, drafting them by a score of 6-3. Lynn would seal the doubles point when the third doubles team of Irina Lapustina and Barbora Cibakova won 6-3. Lynn would drop second singles, but they would take the 1-0 lead into singles.
  • Wagner extended Lynn's lead to two by defeating national No. 15 Maeva Roquebert 6-1, 6-0 in first singles.
  • Bihel put the Fighting Knights within one point of clinching the match when she defeated Anine Wilberg 6-1, 6-1 in fourth singles.
  • Zofia Podbiol lost second singles in straight sets, giving Tampa their first point and keeping their hopes of winning the match alive.
  • After winning the first set, Lapustina dropped the next two in sixth singles which allowed the Spartans to pull within one with two matches remaining.
  • 41st-ranked Giorgia Pigato sealed the match by winning third singles 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. The point moved Lynn to 32-0 all-time against Tampa.
  • Cibakova won fifth singles 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) to give Lynn their fifth point.

UP NEXT
Lynn will return home for a conference matchup against Eckerd on Sunday, Mar. 20 at 2 p.m.
