Fighting Knights take down No. 4 Eagles to earn share of SSC regular season title

Boca Raton, Florida - The Fighting Knights wrapped up an incredible regular season by taking down the fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles to claim a share of the SSC regular season title. Due to their victory over Barry earlier in the season, Lynn will be the top seed at the Sunshine State Conference Tournament this weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Fighting Knights swept the doubles point behind the strong play of their two nationally ranked pairings. First, No. 11 Will Kirkman and Ignacio Martinez won first doubles 6-1. The performance was followed up by a 6-2 win in second doubles by national No. 29 Lucca Baptista and Diego Gonzalez.
  • In singles, No. 48 Martinez put Lynn up 2-0 by winning his third singles matchup 6-3, 6-2.
  • Gonzalez then picked up a massive win in first singles, defeating national No. 5 Juan Ortiz Couder 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 to put Lynn within one point of wrapping up the match.
  • After dropping second and fifth singles, the Fighting Knights led 3-2 with two matches remaining.
  • Gabriele Felline played a tough match in fourth singles, winning the first set 6-3, then dropping the second set 6-2. In the third set, he pulled out the 6-3 victory to give Lynn the match, the number one seed in the SSC Tournament, and a share of the SSC regular season crown.
  • Following the win, head coach Mike Perez had this to share about his team: "The guys have shown this year that they're the epitome of a team. They fight for each other no matter who is sick, who is out, who is injured. They find a way to get it done. I'm very proud of this team, and they deserve the number one seed in the SSC Tournament. I look forward to seeing what we can do this weekend."

UP NEXT
The Fighting Knights earned the No. 1 seed in the SSC Tournament which will be held Apr. 22-24 in Bradenton, Florida. On Friday, the Fighting Knights will take on eighth-seeded Eckerd in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the season, the Fighting Knights defeated the Tritons 6-1.
