SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Lynn University's
Salma Djoubri dropped her Round of 16 matchup in the ITA D-I National Championships on Thursday afternoon, falling in two sets to No. 3 seed Ange Oby Kajuru of Oklahoma State. Djoubri, the lone D-II player in the D-I tournament, earned a bid to the ITA D-I National Championships after winning the ITA D-II National Championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Djoubri and Kajuru went back and forth in the first set, but Djoubri fell in the tiebreaker (6-7[1-7])
- Djoubri jumped out to a 3-1 lead and later led 5-4 before Kajuru closed by winning three of the final four points
- Djoubri battled but dropped the second set (2-6)
- Djoubri pulled to within 3-2 in the final set before Kajuru won the final three points to close the match
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
- Last season, Djoubri was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year and an All-American as a freshman. The sophomore finished last season with a No. 11 rank and a 15-4 record. Djoubri won her Round of 32 matchup vs. Utah's Lopez on Wednesday (6-3, 7-5) to punch her ticket to the Round of 16.
- Oklahoma State's Kajuru was First Team All-Big 12 in Singles and Doubles last season. The sophomore is the No. 3 seed in the tournament and had a 25-6 record last season, earning a spot on the the All-Big 12 All-Freshman Team. Kajuru defeated Wyoming's Brink to earn a spot in the Round of 16.
