Volleyball fends off determined Rollins

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Lynn University volleyball team defeated Rollins 3-1 on Saturday, but the Tars didn't make things easy as they turned a 2-0 deficit into a four-set match. The Fighting Knights cruised to wins in the first two sets 25-13 and 25-9, but the Tars took game three 25-23 and dropped a close 25-21 decision in the fourth set.
 
Lynn improves to 20-7 overall and 11-5 in the Sunshine State Conference with its four-consecutive win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Lynn hit .485 in set one and .400 in set two as it smacked 29 kills to just three errors over the two sets
- After hitting just .171 in the third set, the Fighting Knights rebounded with 16 kills and a .517 hitting percentage in the fourth and final set
- Lynn held decisive leads in kills (59-41), assists (56-40) and digs (57-43)
- A 5-0 run and a 5-1 run gave the hosts a 15-6 lead in set one
- A kill from junior Aline Olegario and two from graduate Dayana Chara sealed set one for Lynn 25-13
- The Fighting Knights again used a 5-0 run in set two for a 9-2 cushion as two Olegario kills started the outburst
- Graduate Kenidy Howard smacked three kills over the middle part of the set for a 20-7 lead
- Olegario, junior Maria Cecilia Pinho and graduate Samantha Wolf added late kills for the 25-9 win
- The Fighting Knights led by as many as five, 12-7 in the third set before the Tars rebounded
- A 6-1 run for Rollins knotted things at 13, while a 6-0 run handed the visitors a 22-18 advantage
- Two late kills gave Rollins a 25-23 win
- Lynn rallied in the fourth set from a handful of early deficits to lead 9-6 behind kills from Cecilia Pinho and Wolf
- Graduate Paige Barash capped a 6-1 run with two service aces for a 21-13 cushion
- The Tars made one final push by narrowing their deficit to 23-20 and again at 24-21
- Olegario capped the match with a kill for a 25-21 win
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Cecilia Pinho hit .600 with 10 kills
- Olegario had a monster match with 16 kills, zero errors and a .593 hitting percentage
- Wolf hit .310 with 12 kills
- Chara added 11 kills
- Graduate Emily Edwards handed out 50 assists
- Junior Isabella Gentile led both teams with 18 digs
