Dougherty sets school triples record in wild home opening 20-20 tie

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Shawn Dougherty became the first player in Lynn history to hit three triples in a game as the Fighting Knights and Colorado Christian played to a 20-20 tie on Friday in the 2023 home opener.
Lynn held leads of 8-0, 14-7 and 19-11 before the Cougars took the lead in the ninth. A clutch double by Yuzuki Okamura tied the game in the bottom of the ninth before the game was called due to darkness.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
- Byron Murray opened the scoring with a first-inning solo home run
- Murray drew a bases loaded walk in the second inning to give Lynn a 2-0 lead
- The Fighting Knights scored six runs in the third inning; David Judge had an RBI single, AJ Orrico hit a three-run triple, Byron Murray knocked in Orrico on a single and Shawn Dougherty drove in Murray on a triple
- Down 8-0, the Cougars answered with seven runs in the top of the fourth, with help from a Gabe Ramos two-run homer
- With the score 8-7, Lynn responded with another six-run frame in the bottom of the fourth
- After a Ryan Ford single scored John Rodriguez, David Judge smacked a two-run homer
- Shawn Dougherty hit is second triple of the game to knock in AJ Orrico and later scored on a Deric LaMontagne single to put Lynn up 14-7 after four innings
- Ryan Ford hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning
- In the sixth inning, Dougherty set a school record with his third triple of the game and later scored on a LaMontagne single
- A Ryan Ford RBI single gave Lynn a 17-8 lead after six innings
- Colorado Christian tallied three runs in the top half of the seventh but the Fighting Knights responded with two runs on a passed ball and wild pitch in the bottom of the frame
- Down 19-11, The Cougars fought back in the ninth inning with nine runs, finished off by a Boedy Flores two-run triple that gave CCU a 20-19 lead
- In the bottom of the ninth, after Dougherty advanced to second on a single and throwing error, pinch-hitter Yuzuki Okamura tagged an RBI double to tie the game, 20-20
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS: 
- Dougherty's three triples broke the school record of two triples that had previously been accomplished five times, the last by Ryan Sharman on 4/28/2007
- Lynn also set a school team record with four triples in one game (Dougherty 3, Orrico 1)
- The Fighting Knights scored their most runs in a game since a 22-18 win over Wilmington on March 4, 2019
- Led by Ryan Ford and Shawn Dougherty's four hits, Lynn had seven different batters record multiple hits in the game
- Byron Murray has recorded a home run and a stolen base in each of his first two games this season
- David Judge has three hits in each of his first two games this season  
- John Rodriguez stole three bases for the Fighting Knights
- The Fighting Knights reached base 13 times via walk or hit-by-pitch
- Lynn scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings
