BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and on an error in the ninth to defeat Erskine, 8-7, on Thursday.
First baseman David Judge recorded his fourth consecutive multi-hit game to start the season as the Fighting Knights improved to 2-1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Erskine started the scoring in the top of the second with a Juan Jaime RBI double
- Starting pitcher Nathan Shane got out of a jam unscathed in the top of the third after inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning
- Third baseman Cristian Otero and shortstop John Rodriguez hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the third to give Lynn a 2-1 edge
- Shane punched out two Erskine batters in a scoreless top of the fourth
- Designated hitter Peter Avino singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and later scored on a double by Judge
- Erskine scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead
- The Flying Fleet added another run on an Armando Becerra triple in the sixth inning
- Judge doubled and scored to make it a 5-4 game after six
- An RBI triple by Erskine's Tariq Bacon made the score 6-4 entering the bottom of the eighth
- In the bottom of the eighth, Lynn loaded the bases on a Cristian Otero hit-by-pitch, AJ Orrico single and Byron Murray walk
- The Fighting Knights made it a one-run ballgame after Shawn Dougherty was beaned with the bags full
- Catcher Yuzuki Okamura hit a clutch two-run single with the bases loaded to put Lynn up 7-6 after eight innings
- Erskine tied the game in the top of the ninth on a Becerra home run
- Right fielder Ryan Ford led off the bottom of the ninth with a double
- After Judge was intentionally walked, Otero attempted a sacrifice bunt to the left side
- The Erskine third baseman charged and fielded Otero's bunt cleanly but his throw was low and skipped into right field, allowing Ford to score the winning run from second base
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Judge is 10-for-18 on the season and is tied for the conference lead in hits
- Okamura is 4-for-4 this season in the eighth inning or later
- After being named SSC Player of the Week, Murray drew three walks and scored a run
- Lynn batters drew eight walks in the win
- Rodriguez stole his team-leading fourth base of the campaign
- Shane has started both of Lynn's victories and now has a 4.32 ERA in 2023
- Reliever JP Perez has also appeared in both Fighting Knight victories and has allowed just one run over 4.1 innings pitched
- The Fighting Knights are averaging 10.25 runs per game and are slugging an SSC-best .568 this season
