BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Lynn softball team used a series of great defensive plays, timely hits and dominant pitching to sweep a doubleheader against Barry, 5-4 (8 innings) and 5-0, on Saturday. Aymee Godmaire hit a walk-off single in game one and Haley Fardanesh tossed a shutout in game two, as Lynn moved to 17-15 overall and 7-5 in the Sunshine State Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
- Josey Sumpter hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Godmaire, to give Lynn a 2-0 lead
- Barry took a 4-2 lead after Alexis Bailey started the inning with a single and the offense rallied for four runs
- Lynn got a run back in the bottom half of the inning after Aryana Galioto singled, stole second and scored on Morgan Simpson's single
- The Fighting Knights tied the game in the bottom of the sixth after Simpson drove in Taylor Scala with a base hit
- Cameron Buzzell was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning and later scored on Godmaire's single to give Lynn a walk-off win by a score of 5-4
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 1):
- The first three hitters in Lynn's lineup (T. Scala, Simpson, Godmaire) combined to go 7-for-14
- Otero collected her second multi-hit game with a double of the week
- Sumpter is now tied for fourth in the SSC with four home runs on the year
- The Fighting Knights stole six bases in the win
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
- Sumpter and Adriana Otero each scored on grounders in the bottom of the fourth inning for the first runs of the game
- Olivia Lovins blasted a three-run home run, scoring Otero and Monique Poitevin, to extend Lynn's lead to 5-0
- Starting pitcher Haley Fardanesh retired the Barry lineup in order in the top of the seventh innings to complete the shutout
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 2):
- Fardanesh's pitching line: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 SO
- Fardanesh pitched eight scoreless innings between the two games to lower her season ERA to 2.59
- Lovins hit her first home run in a Lynn uniform and collected her first 3-RBI game of 2023
- Simpson stole her 25th base of the season
- With 10 combined stolen bases between the two games, Lynn now has 95 steals on the season
- The Fighting Knights homered in all three games of the series and were a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts
