BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Lynn baseball team used an eight-run eighth inning to defeat Rollins, 11-6, Saturday afternoon. Ryan Ford capped off the eighth inning with a three-run home run, as Lynn scored their second-most runs in a game this season.
The Fighting Knights improved to 8-6-1 overall and are 2-3 in the Sunshine State Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Lynn scored first when Peter Avino knocked in AJ Orrico
- Byron Murray doubled and scored on a Shawn Dougherty single to give Lynn a 2-0 lead after one inning
- Rollins tied the game in the top of the second on a Jimmy Theis two-run homer
- John Rodriguez singled, stole second and later scored on an Avino sac fly to give the Fighting Knights a 3-2 in the bottom half of the second
- Starting pitcher Marcus Eusebio pitched a clean top of the third
- The Tars tied the game on a Ryan Coleman solo home run in the top of the fourth and took the lead on a Jorge Ramirez solo home run two innings later
- Relief pitcher Drew Clark entered the game with runners on second and third and two outs and struck out his only batter he faced to end a Rollins threat
- Rollins displayed more power with two more solo home runs to take a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth
- Lynn's eighth inning rally started when Deric LaMontagne reached on an error by the second baseman
- Cristian Otero drove in LaMontagne with a single to cut Rollins lead to two, 6-4
- Orrico hit a bunt single, Yuzuki Okamura walked and Leon Paulino hit a two-run double to tie the game at six runs apiece
- After Byron Murray was intentionally walked to load the bases, Dougherty was hit by a pitch to give Lynn their first lead since the third inning and Paulino scored on a wild pitch
- Ford continued the rally with a three-run shot to extend the Fighting Knights lead to 11-6
- Relief pitcher Jared Terefenco pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to end the game and pick up his first win of 2023
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Orrico led Lynn with three hits to raise his season average to .365 in is tied for fifth in the SSC with 23 hits on the year
- Paulino now has seven extra-base hits and 11 RBI in nine games played this season
- Murray went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks and has walked 15 times in 15 games played
- David Judge went 2-for-5 and ranks 13th in the SSC with a .389 batting average
- Ford recorded his third game this season with 3 RBI
- Rodriguez ranks third in the Sunshine State Conference with seven stolen bases
