LAKELAND, Fla. - The Lynn softball team split their doubleheader at Florida Southern on Friday. The Fighting Knights lost game one, 1-2, but held on for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. Sofia Jimenez drove in all three runs in the game two win.
The Fighting Knights are 18-23 overall and 8-13 in the SSC.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
- The Mocs used two singles and a sac fly to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning
- Faith Miller led off the top of the sixth inning with a double and later scored on an Olivia Lovins base hit to tie the game at one
- Florida Southern took the lead in the bottom half of the frame on Destiny Colgate's RBI double
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 1):
- Starting pitcher Faith Miller pitched a complete game and allowed two runs while hitting a double and scoring a run from the three-hole in the batting order
- Morgan Simpson went 2-for-4 and stole her 30th base of the season
- Lovins recorded her seventh multi-hit game of 2023
- Eliza Gonzalez started her fourth straight game and had two hits in three at bats
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
- Lynn scored two runs with two outs in the top of the first inning
- Faith Miller singled, Josey Sumpter doubled and Sofia Jimenez drove both runners in with a single to give Lynn a 2-0 lead
- The Mocs scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on a Kelsey Peck RBI triple
- Jimenez knocked in another run with an RBI single in the top of the third inning to put the Fighting Knights ahead, 3-1
- Florida Southern threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning
- After an RBI single made the score 3-2 and put runners on first and third, reliever Faith Miller induced a ground out to end the game
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 2):
- Starting pitcher Haley Fardanesh allowed just two runs over six innings to lower her season ERA to 2.74 and earn her seventh win of the year
- Miller tossed a scoreless seventh inning to pick up her first save of 2023 and posted a hit and run scored for the second straight game
- Jimenez went 2-for-3 with a season-high three RBI
- Sumpter recorded her tenth extra-base hit of the season with her first inning double
- Gonzalez posted her third hit of the day, raising her season average 56 points over the two games
- Lynn went both games of a doubleheader without committing an error for the fourth time this season
