Murray’s 39th blast ties school record for career home runs

TAMPA, Fla. - Senior Byron Murray made school history despite No. 3 Tampa sweeping Lynn, 6-4 and 3-2, Saturday. The Fighting Knights outfielder has hit five home runs over his last eight games. His latest home run on Saturday in game one was his 39th career home run as a Fighting Knight, tying Gabe MacDougall for the most in school history.  

The losses drop Lynn to 16-27-1 overall and 7-20 in the Sunshine State Conference.  

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1): 
- Tampa began the top of the first inning with a pair of singles, which led to a 1-0 lead 
- Byron Murray hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at one 
- AJ Orrico led off the top of the sixth inning with a walk and later scored give Lynn a 2-1 advantage 
- The Spartans hit four doubles and a home run in the bottom of the sixth to rally for five runs in the frame 
- John Rodriguez led off the top of the eighth inning with a solo home run to cut the Tampa lead to three runs 
- Murray was beaned with the bases loaded, scoring Orrico, to make the score 6-4 after eight innings 
- Lynn put two runners on the top of the ninth inning but was unable to score for a 6-4 final 

FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 1): 
- Murray's home run tied a school record for most career home runs (39) 
- Murray's 13 home runs on the season are the second most in the SSC 
- Orrico went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base 
- Deric LaMontagne recorded his 11th multi-hit game of 2023 
- Rodriguez added two hits, including his eighth home run of the season 
- Starting pitcher Chris Mormile allowed just one run over 4.1 IP 
- Relief pitcher Nathan Shane tossed 2.2 scoreless innings 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2): 
- Each team scored a run in the third inning 
- Orrico singled, stole second and scored on David Judge's single in the top half of the frame 
- Tampa scored on a base hit in the bottom of the inning 
- Rodriguez drove home LaMontagne with a sac fly to regain the lead in the top of fourth 
- The Spartans took a 3-2 lead on Drew Ehrhard's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning 

FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 2): 
- Judge and Leon Paulino combined for four of the Fighting Knights five hits 
- Judge went 3-for-7 on the day to raise his season average to .370 
- Both of Paulino's hits were doubles and he now has a team-leading 14 on the year 
- Orrico reached base six times over the doubleheader to raise his season OB% to a team-leading .447 
- Orrico stole a base in each game and has swiped eight bags over his last 10 games 
- Orrico scored three times on the day and ranks 3rd in the SSC with 49 runs scored in 2023 
- Starting pitcher Eric Heatter pitched three innings without allowing an earned run 
- Relief pitcher Tyler Romanias struck out six batters over 3.2 IP 
- Relief pitcher Jake Mckenna struck out three batters over 1.1 scoreless innings 
- Fighting Knight pitchers allowed just two hits but walked 10

Lynn plays its final series of the season when they host Eckerd next weekend. Game one of the three-game set begins on Friday, May 12, at 3:00 pm.
