Volleyball closes Thrasher Classic with win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lynn University volleyball team closed the Thrasher Classic on Saturday evening with a win over Alabama-Huntsville, 3-2, after enduring a loss to host Trevecca Nazarene, 3-2, earlier in the day.
 
The split on day two of the season-opening tournament evens the Fighting Knights record at 2-2.
 
Trevecca Nazarene – 2-3 (25-11, 25-19, 22-25, 24-26, 11-15)
- Lynn led Trevecca in kills (57-43), aces (9-2), assists (55-35) and digs (64-48)
- The Fighting Knights dominated the first set and opened up a 10-2 lead
- Graduate student Shannon Burgess smacked a late kill and two errors on the Trojans sealed the 25-11 win for Lynn
- Junior Aline Olegario broke a 7-7 tie with a kill in set two and Lynn slowly pulled away from Trevecca Nazarene
- Kills from graduates Emily Edwards and Dayana Chara handed the Fighting Knights a 20-14 advantage before a late kill from graduate Paige Barash sealed the 25-19 lead
- The Trojans led throughout set three and held early leads of 10-6 and 13-8
- Lynn closed the deficit to two late behind a Barash kill but the Trojans picked up the win behind a kill and assist from Emilee McDonald
- Trevecca never trailed in game four and used a 5-1 run for a 13-8 lead and later used a 4-0 spurt to grab a 21-12 advantage
- Chara smacked a kill and the Fighting Knights took advantage of two attack errors to knot the set at 24-24 before the Trojans scored the final two points for a 26-24 victory
- Trevecca scored the first five points in the fifth set and later closed with three-straight points for a 15-11 win
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS
- Barash led Lynn with 15 kills
- A day after setting a career-high, Olegario raised the bar to 12 kills
- Junior Maria Cecilia Pinho added 10 kills
- Junior Isabella Gentile paced both teams with four aces to go along with a match-high 17 digs
- Edwards handed out 42 assists
 
Alabama-Huntsville – 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 19-25, 17-15)
- The Fighting Knights had 63 kills, hit .190 and had 73 digs
- Freshman Fabia Gonzalez Stanton and Olegario posted two kills midway through set one for a pair of five-point leads
- The Chargers battled back to knot the score at 23, before an error and kill from Gonzalez Stanton handed Lynn the 25-23 win
- Huntsville used a 4-0 run in the second set to break a 9-9 tie and later took control with a 6-0 run for the 25-18 win
- Huntsville collected a 4-0 scoring spurt in the third set for an 11-9 lead
- Both teams traded 3-0 runs late in the set to knot things at 21 and Lynn picked up the win behind a pair of kills from junior Peyton Gash
- The fourth set featured 14 ties before the Chargers collected a 4-0 run for a 20-17 lead
- Huntsville earned the 25-19 win with another 4-0 scoring run
- Lynn posted its best statistical effort in the fifth set with 13 kills and a .391 hitting percentage
- The Chargers raced out to a 6-0 lead before two kills from both Gash and Barash started Lynn's rally
- A kill from Gash and two more from Barash pulled the Fighting Knights to within 13-11
- Two kills from Olegario and two late Huntsville errors sealed the 17-15 win
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS
- Barash led the way with 15 kills to go along with 15 digs
- Olegario and Gonzalez Stanton had 12 and 11 kills, respectively
- Gash had eight kills and hit .462
- Edwards had 56 assists, her highest total since handing out 57 against Huntsville last season
- She added 13 digs as well
- Gentile finished with 17 digs
