BOCA RATON, Fla. – Freshman
Ariana Rego was a perfect 5-for-5 on the afternoon as the Lynn University softball team dropped a doubleheader with St. Thomas, Saturday. The Fighting Knights lost the opener, 7-6, and endured a 7-5 defeat in the nightcap.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
- The Bobcats scored an unearned run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead
- Lynn tied the game in the bottom of the first when senior
Eliza Gonzalez doubled and later scored
- Rego singled and then stole second, third and home to put the Fighting Knights up, 2-1, after two innings
- The Bobcats tied the game in the third on a two-out single
- Senior
Josey Sumpter smacked a solo homer in the fourth inning as Lynn regained the lead, 3-2
- Rego singled, stole second and scored on senior
Olivia Lovins' single to make the score 4-2
- Seven hits and an error led to a five-run top of the sixth for St. Thomas
- Four of the Bobcats' five hits in the inning went for extra bases (four doubles, one home run)
- Lynn rallied in the bottom of the seventh with two RBI groundouts but failed to score the tying run for a final score of 7-6 in favor of St. Thomas
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 1):
- Rego went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs and four stolen bases
- Sumpter hit her first homer of the season and the eighth of her career at Lynn
- Prickett tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out three
- Gonzalez posted her third multi-hit game of the season
HOW IT HAPPENED: (Game 2):
- Gonzalez handed the hosts a quick 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the first inning that plated senior
Morgan Simpson
- The Bobcats answered with two in the top of the second for a 2-1 lead
- Rego led off the home half of the second with a single before stealing both second and third bases
- She scored when Buzzell singled for her first of three RBIs in the second game
- St. Thomas took a 5-2 lead with a three-run third that was highlighted by a two-run double
- Lovins singled in the fifth and later scored on a Simpson single that narrowed the Lynn deficit to 5-3
- In the top of the sixth, Buzzell drove a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for a home run that scored Rego and tied the contest at 5-5
- The Bobcats sealed the win with two runs, one earned in the top of the seventh for the 7-5 victory
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 2):
- Buzzell finished 2-for-3 with three RBI behind her two-run HR
- Simpson was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored
- Gonzalez added a hit and an RBI
- Rego capped her perfect afternoon with a 3-of-3 outing with two runs scored and two more stolen bases
- Junior Maddie Prickett struckout five in 4.1 innings of work
