ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - No. 23 Lynn baseball lost its Sunshine State Conference opener at Eckerd Friday evening, 11-8. Each team scored five runs in an offensive second inning. The Tritons' 1-4 hitters combined to go 11-for-20 while Lynn posted 11+ hits for the sixth time in its last seven games.
The Fighting Knights are now 8-4 in 2024.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after their leadoff hitter singled and later scored on a ground out
- Lynn began the top of the second with four straight singles by Shawn Dougherty, Leon Paulino, DJ Flowers and Deric LaMontagne to plate two quick runs
- AJ Orrico's sac fly scored Flowers to make the score 3-1
- Cole Fowler knocked in Jesse Robinson and Julio Camarena with a base hit as Lynn took a 5-1 lead
- The Tritons responded with five runs of their own in the bottom fo the second on three singles, an error and a home run to regain the lead, 6-5
- Dougherty led off the third with an opposite-field single and later scored on a Flowers sac fly to tie the game
- Starting pitcher Nathan Shane struck out the side in the bottom of the third inning
- Eckerd hit another homer during a three-run fourth inning to break the tie
- Juan Carlos Camarena's RBI ground out scored Fowler in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 9-7
- Robinson led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run to center field to put Lynn within one run, 9-8
- The Fighting Knights threatened but left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth
- The Tritons scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 11-8

- Robinson has three homers in his last seven games
- Fowler is hitting .393 with 8 RBI over his six-game hitting and RBI streak
- Dougherty extended his hitting streak to eight games and is hitting .364 (12-for-33) over the stretch
- Paulino has multiple hits in six of his last eight games and is hitting .500 (14-for-28) over his current six-game hitting streak
- Orrico extended his hitting streak to seven games
- Reliever Matt Tiberia allowed two runs over four innings, striking out five
