Sumpter pitches all 14 innings, hits walk-off double in historic Lynn win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Josey Sumpter pitched a complete game and hit a walk-off double in a thrilling 3-2 win over Palm Beach Atlantic in 14 innings, Friday afternoon. The 14-inning game is the second-longest in Lynn softball history and the longest win in school history.
 
The victory improves Lynn's overall record to 11-27 and is its second SSC win of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The game was scoreless through five innings
- The Sailfish scored a run in the top of the fifth on a double and a single
- Lynn answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth
- Isabella Rittle led off the inning with a single
- Ariana Rego pinch-ran for Rittle, advanced to second on Sumpter's sac bunt, and stole third
- Rego scored on Morgan Simpson's base hit to tie the game, 1-1
- Teagan Riley's sac fly scored Simpson one batter later to give the Fighting Knights a 2-1 lead
- PBA tied the game in the seventh, hitting a single and triple with two outs in the frame
- Lynn had two batters reach in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to score
- The Sailfish hit a leadoff single in the top of the eighth but Sumpter got three straight outs, including an inning-ending strikeout
- PBA had a runner on second with no outs in the top of the 10th but Sumpter induced three straight fly outs
- Each team threatened to score by having the leadoff batter reach base in the bottom of the 10th and top of the 11th but to no avail
- Monique Poitevin led off the bottom of the 14th with a single and moved to second on Rittle's sac bunt
- Sumpter hit a deep line drive over the head of the Sailfish center fielder to score Poitevin with the game-winning run

- Sumpter's pitching line: 14 IP, 11 H, 2 R, 5 SO
- Sumpter threw 188 pitches and faced 55 batters without allowing a walk
- Simpson, Rego and Kyra Sunga each stole a base
- Simpson led the Fighting Knights with three hits
- Over the last four games, Lynn pitches have struck out 19 batters while walking three and have allowed just eight earned runs
- The longest game in program history was a 15-inning loss at Tampa on April 16, 2000
