Softball drops two close games at Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Lynn University softball lost both games of its doubleheader by one run against Embry-Riddle, 4-3 and 7-6 in eight innings, on Saturday. Josey Sumpter had three hits in the first game, Kyra Sunga collected three hits in the night cap, while Morgan Simpson stole four bases over the two games. 
 
The Fighting Knights are now 11-30 overall in 2024.  
  
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1): 
- Simpson reached on an error and stole two bases to get to third base 
- Eliza Gonzalez's sac bunt scored Simpson to give Lynn a 1-0 lead 
- A pair of singles allowed the Eagles to tie the game, 1-1, through one inning 
- A throwing error gave Embry-Riddle a 2-1 lead in the second inning 
- Lynn took the lead in the top of the sixth with two runs 
- Sunga walked and advanced to third on Sumpter's base hit to right field 
- A throwing error allowed both Sunga and Sumpter to score for a 3-2 Fighting Knight advantage 
- In the bottom of the sixth, a walk and an error led to a sac bunt to tie the game at three 
- ERAU took the lead on a strikeout, as the runner on third scored on a wild pitch and the batter reached first safely 
- Lynn posted two hits in the top of the seventh but were unable to bring home the tying run 
  
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 1): 
- Sumpter went 3-for-3 with a run scored and has five hits in her last 10 at bats 
- Gonzalez drove in her team-leading 19th run of the season 
- Madison Prickett pitched a complete game, allowed four runs but just one earned run 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2): 
- The Eagles scored on a single to right to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third 
- Ariana Rego singled home Sunga to tie the game a half inning later 
- A hit by pitch and an error led to ERAU's second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth 
- Lynn rallied for three runs with two out in the top of the fifth 
- Simpson singled and stole second 
- Gonzalez doubled to right field as Simpson scored to tie the game 
- Gonzalez and Monique Poitevin each scored on an error to give Lynn a 4-2 lead 
- A leadoff single led to the Eagles' third run in the bottom of the fifth 
- Embry-Riddle tied the game on an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings 
- With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth, Olivia Lovins reached on an error as Sunga and Gonzalez scored to give the Fighting Knights a 6-4 lead 
- ERAU scored on an error and a double to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth and then won the game on a bases-loaded hit by pitch 
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Game 2): 
- Gonzalez recorded her team-leading 10th extra-base hit and 20 RBI of the season 
- Simpson collected her 40th hit and 32nd and 33rd stolen bases of the season 
- Sunga went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and ranks 4th in the SSC with a .382 batting average 
- Rego's two hits raised her batting average to .317
