Lynn men’s soccer staff named National Staff of the Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches announced on Friday that the Lynn University men's soccer staff earned 2024 National Staff of the Year honors after their undefeated season and victory in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament in Matthews, NC.

This season marked one of the best records in program history, with an overall record of 20-0-2. It was also head coach John Rootes' first undefeated season with the Fighting Knights, as he became the most successful coach in program history with three national championships (2012, 2014, and 2024).

Assistant coach Anthony Desperito made history by becoming the first coach in program history to win a national title as both a full-time coach and a student-athlete. The former striker played under Rootes during the 2012 season and scored the game-winning goal against Saginaw Valley State in the championship match. He also earned NCAA Most Outstanding Offensive Player honors and lifted the national title. Two years later, Desperito and Rootes won another title together, this time as coaches.

The duo raised their third title together, and Desperito's second as part of the coaching staff, helping to make Lynn the No. 1 ranked team in the country for Division II.

Elise Calzadilla has been the Athletic Trainer at Lynn since the 2023 season. She has been instrumental in keeping the men's soccer team healthy and prepared throughout the season. Her expertise and commitment play a vital role in the team's success both on and off the field.
