BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn women's basketball team (7-3, 2-2 SSC) battled throughout Saturday afternoon's Sunshine State Conference matchup but came up short in an 83-57 setback to Florida Southern at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center.
Trinity Mocadlo led the Fighting Knights with 19 points as Lynn produced several scoring runs and competed on both ends, but Florida Southern's pressure defense proved decisive in the conference contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Florida Southern won the opening tip and struck first with back-to-back paint touches and a second-chance finish to open a 4-0 lead
- Lynn answered with energy on the glass, as Mocadlo created an extra possession and
Serena Baker buried a second-chance three to get the Fighting Knights on the board
- The Mocs' pressure created early momentum, turning Lynn turnovers into quick threes as Florida Southern pushed the margin to 16-5 midway through the quarter
- Lynn settled in at the free-throw line and from deep, with Angelina DeLeon knocking down a three and Mocadlo and DeLeon adding points at the stripe to cut into the deficit
- After Florida Southern stretched the lead to 25-12 late, Lynn closed the quarter with a Mocadlo three off a
Karishma Ortiz assist to make it 25-15 after one
- Lynn opened the period with a Wentworth layup, but Florida Southern responded with a steady run fueled by paint scoring and second-chance tip-ins, rebuilding separation
- Wentworth and Mocadlo helped keep Lynn within reach with timely buckets, including a Mocadlo three and a finish in the lane, but Florida Southern's pace and extra possessions kept the lead comfortable heading into halftime at 49-29
- Lynn came out of the break with a spark, as Baker scored on a second-chance layup and DeLeon drilled a three to trim the deficit
- The Fighting Knights continued to chip away behind Wentworth's perimeter touch and transition play, cutting it to 51-37 after a Wentworth three in the open floor
- Florida Southern answered each push with paint finishes and put-backs, then used another late burst to extend the margin back out, taking a 64-49 lead into the fourth
- Florida Southern opened the final period with stops and converted turnovers into quick scores, pushing the lead back to 17 with a layup
- Lynn battled at the line and got buckets from DeLeon and Mocadlo inside, but Florida Southern's shot-making from three and continued second-chance production created the final separation
