Softball splits mid-week doubleheader with Keiser

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Lynn University softball team picked up a split in a non-conference doubleheader at Keiser on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue and White fell victim to a seventh inning rally in the opener, 3-2, before closing out the afternoon with a 5-2 win in the nightcap.
 
Lynn now holds a 6-1 overall record while Keiser is 2-2 on the year.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Starting pitcher Gabriella Lindsey held Keiser scoreless through three innings, stranding five total baserunners.
  • Lynn jumped out in front in the top of the third as Kyra Sunga smacked a double into left field to score Aun'Yale Howard from second, 1-0.
  • The Fighting Knights piled another run onto their lead in the top of the fourth as Cameron Buzzell scored on a Seahawk throwing error, 2-0.
  • Lynn tallied a pair of hits between the fifth and seventh frames on a single from Aiyana Hicks and a base knock from Quinn Lockhart.
  • Keiser busted the game wide open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on a Lynn error before bringing another run in on a single, 2-2.
  • With one out left, the Seahawks walked off the game on a double hit to left field in the bottom of the seventh, 3-2.
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (GAME 1)
  • Lindsey went the distance, pitching her second complete game of the early season. She finished the game with five walks and seven strikeouts while giving up just five hits.
  • Howard extended her hitting streak to six games, recording a hit in every game so far this season.
  • Sunga tallied her sixth double through six games. She has recorded a hit in every game so far this year.
  • The Fighting Knights were held to just three stolen bases including two from Howard and one from Buzzell.
  • Hicks recorded two hits in the game being the only member of the Blue and White to have a multi-hit game. She has recorded two hits in her previous two starts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Keiser struck first in the second inning on a bloop single to go up early, 1-0.
  • Lynn answered back in the top of the third as Hicks sent Sunga home on an RBI single, 1-1.
  • A single from Buzzell scored Hicks from third later in the third to give the Fighting Knights the lead by the end of the frame, 2-1.
  • The Seahawks struck back in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases before knocking in a run to tie the contest up at 2-2.
  • With the game coming down to the wire, Sunga sliced a single through the left side for an RBI single to take the lead in the top of the sixth, 3-2.
  • A massive double from Teagan Riley gave Lynn its biggest cushion of the afternoon, scoring both Sunga and Howard to put the Blue and White up by three heading into the bottom of the inning, 5-2.
  • After allowing just one base runner on via error in the seventh, Kayley Zazzali closed out the game for the Fighting Knights, 5-3.
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (GAME 2)
  • Both Howard and Sunga had multi-hit games in the nightcap, continuing both of their hitting streaks.
  • Madi Prickett went three innings with four strikeouts before Zazzali (2-0) took over for the final four innings, earning the win while striking out three batters.
  • Teagan and Buzzell both recorded doubles in the game as the only extra-base hits in the contest.
  • Hicks recorded the only stolen base in the game, bringing her total to five on the year.
 
UP NEXT
The Fighting Knights will head to Miami Gardens to take on St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 12:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
