Sunga’s clutch walk-off seals Tuesday doubleheader sweep

CLERMONT, Fla.- The Lynn University softball team picked up a pair of thrilling wins on the second day of The 2025 Spring Games tournament, Tuesday afternoon. Kyra Sunga's bases-clearing hit in the seventh inning of the 6-5 win over Edinboro was the highlight, capping off a successful two-win afternoon for the Fighting Knights.
 
Following the 8-0 shutout over California (Penn.) and 6-5 victory over Edinboro, Lynn sits at 9-11 on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Sunga got things rolling, reaching home plate on a wild pitch to put Lynn up 1-0 in the first.
  • Later, Aiyana Hicks scored Onnalee Floriano from third on a bunt to give the Fighting Knights a 2-0 advantage.
  • Hicks later reached home plate herself on a Vulcan throwing error to go up 3-0 by the end of the opening frame.
  • After a quiet couple of innings, Teagan Riley laid down a well-placed bunt to score Sunga from second in the third frame, 4-0.
  • Riley continued to rack up RBIs in the contest, scoring Sunga on an RBI single in the fifth to give the Blue and White a 5-0 edge.
  • Cameron Buzzell kept the fifth-inning rally going, lacing a single through the left side to score Riley, 6-0.
  • Marina Goins capped off the fifth with a clutch two-RBI single to give Lynn an 8-0 cushion heading into the bottom of the inning.
  • Despite allowing two Vulcan baserunners on in the fifth, Gabriella Lindsey and the Lynn defense managed to close the game out early behind the run rule, 8-0.
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (GAME 1):
  • Lindsey (3-4) picked up her first complete game shut-out as a Fighting Knight, giving up just four hits and three walks with one strikeout.
  • Sunga continued her excellent 2025 season offensively, cracking three hits and scoring three runs. She now has three games with three or more hits and six total games with multiple hits.
  • Riley picked up her fourth multi-hit game of 2025, racking up two singles in the game.
  • Onnalee Floriano tallied her first triple of her career as a Fighting Knight, coming late in the first inning.
  • Hicks continued her dominance as a speed threat, posting her consecutive game with a stolen base. She currently leads the team with 16 stolen bags.
  • Both Hicks and Sunga tallied two stolen bases apiece in the game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Edinboro got on the board fast, putting up two runs on a two-run homer in the top of the first, 2-0.
  • Riley managed to cut the FIghting Scots' lead to just one, reaching home on a passed ball in the bottom of the second, 2-1.
  • The Fighting Scots struck back in the third, cracking a solo home run before delivering a late RBI double to go up by three, 4-1.
  • The Blue and White continued to battle in the bottom of the third as Aun'Yale Howard sent Kyleigh Hope home on a sacrifice fly to cut Lynn's deficit in half, 4-2.
  • Sunga blasted a double off the outfield fence to tally another run and cut Edinboro's lead to just one, 4-3.
  • After a quiet few innings, Edinboro bounced back in the seventh inning with an RBI single to advance the Fighting Scots' lead to two, 5-3.
  • Lynn faced a bases-loaded situation late in the seventh as pitcher Madi Prickett locked in to deliver three quick strikeouts and get her team out of the inning, giving up just one run in the frame.
  • The Fighting Knights began to string base hits and walks together in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases as Sunga came up to the plate with Lynn down two outs.
  • A wild pitch allowed Buzzell to score before Sunga dropped a single in center field to score both Howard and Anabel O'Donnell, earning Lynn the exciting walk-off victory in the seventh, 6-5.
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (GAME 2):
  • Prickett (4-6) picked up her fourth win of the year, striking out six while giving up just one walk and one run in 4.1 innings of action.
  • Sunga's seventh inning single marks the first walk-off hit for the Fighting Knights in 2025.
  • Sunga recorded the only multi-hit game in the contest while tallying her ninth double of the season.
  • Riley picked up her first triple as a Fighting Knight in the bottom of the second.
  • Hicks stretched her stolen base streak to four games following the Tuesday nightcap.
 
UP NEXT:
The Blue and White earned a bit of a break, taking Wednesday off before jumping back into action at The Spring Games on Thursday as it takes on Clarion at 2 p.m. and Tiffin at 4:30 p.m.
