Softball drops series opener to No. 14 Saint Leo in extra innings

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn University softball team came up just short in an eight-inning thriller with the 14th ranked Lions of Saint Leo on Friday night, 3-2. The Fighting Knights dropped to 12-25 overall and 6-19 in Sunshine State Conference play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Leo took an early 1-0 lead in the first, utilizing a wild pitch to get on the board early
- Lynn tied things up in the bottom of the fourth as Aun'Yale Howard got the ball rolling with a lead-off single
- Later in the inning, Howard was brought home on a sacrifice bunt from Teagan Riley to knot the game up at 1-1
- The Fighting Knights picked up where they left off in the fifth, stringing together a pair of base knocks from Cameron Buzzell and Marina Goins to bring home the go-ahead run, 2-1
- Pitcher Madi Prickett put together a sting of excellent innings allowing just three hits for no runs heading into the seventh inning
- She also stranded five base runners heading into the seventh
- With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Blue and White suffered a costly error that scored a run for the Lions and sent the game into extra innings
- Saint Leo quickly loaded the bases in the top of the eighth as the Lynn defense held the Lions to just one run, 3-2
- Kyleigh Hope opened the bottom of the eighth with a base knock, but the Lynn offense came up just short as the Fighting Knights dropped the series opener, 3-2
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Prickett put on another incredible showing, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits
- She finished the game with four strikeouts, bringing her season total to 155
- Howard had the most productive day at the plate, tallying two hits and a stolen base
- Howard has put together 12 multi-hit performances this spring while she has a team best 33 stolen bags
- Goins has brought in a run in three of her last five starts

- Lynn continues its final home stand of the season on Saturday, Apr. 26th as the Fighting Knights host Saint Leo in a Senior Day doubleheader, kicking off at 3:00 p.m.
